While the collector car auctions suffered a significant downturn during Monterey Car Week this year, the motorcycles that went to auction had some very strong results, with two Crockers selling into the five most valuable motorcycles of all time, and the most expensive Indian of all-time being sold, too. There were some outlier results, and some bargains as well.
"The Quail – a Motorsport Gathering" continues to grow in stature. Already a world class automotive lifestyle event and concours of significant gravitas, this year "The Quail" played host to 11 major vehicle debuts from Acura, Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Drako, Lamborghini, Lotus, Pagani, Singer Vehicle Design, Rolls-Royce, and SSC. That's because it has become increasingly elite with a fixed limit on the number of tickets. Bugatti chose today's Quail Motorsports Gathering at Monterey Car Week to take the wraps off its latest hypercar, the Centodieci. The Centodieci pays homage to the Bugatti EB110 built in the 1990s, with all ten cars in the limited production run already sold at EUR€8,000,000 (plus VAT) apiece. The familiar 8.0-litre Bugatti W16 engine has been tweaked to produce 1,600 hp at 7,000 rpm, providing an electronically capped 380 km/h top speed.

The possibility of being eaten alive seems to be one of mankind's greatest fears. Though shark attacks average just 84 a year globally, of which just six are fatal, going for a swim off the back of a boat in the ocean is not a pastime undertaken lightly. Now there's a scientifically-proven device which deters sharks and enables far safer ocean swimming from a boat or jetty. In Western Australia, the Government now offers an AUD 200 subsidy for the purchasers of only Ocean Guardian products. Is keeping the kids safe worth US$3,000?
The Goldtop 1957 Gibson Les Paul guitar which Duane Allman used to record "Layla" alongside Eric Clapton, has sold for US$1.25 million at auction, becoming only the seventh guitar in history to sell for more than US$1,000,000.
